Caring for Your Senior Cat

As they age, just like humans, cats become less active and sleep more.  Proper nutrition and diet are essential to maintain your cat’s immune system and slow aging.  Regular wellness exams are essential to help spot health problems early, including:

·         Dental problems. While many cats develop some type of dental problem or gum disease, this can become more serious as your pet gets older.  Signs: Trouble eating, painful when touched. Reduce risk:  Regular dental exams; brush cat’s teeth two to three times a week; feed cat chew treats to help reduce tarter build up.

·         Kidney Disease.  Kidney failure is one of the biggest killers of cats of any age, but it is an older cat’s biggest challenge. Signs: Excessive urination and thirst; weight loss.  Reduce risk:  High quality diet and fresh drinking water.

·         Diabetes.  Just as in humans, diabetes in on the rise in cats. Signs:  Excessive urination and thirst.  Reduce risk: Healthy weight control and a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet.

·         Hyperthyroidism.  Also on the rise in cats; caused by hormonal changes in the thyroid gland.  Few cases (about 1%)  are caused by malignancies.  Signs:  Weight loss, increased food consumption and vomiting. Reduce risk:  None.

·        Arthritis.  While highly treatable and common in older cats, arthritis (also known as degenerative joint disease) can be very painful.   Signs:  Limping, stiff movement and reluctance to climb stairs or jump.  Reduce risk:  Keep body weight normal; make sure your cat has a dry, warm place to sleep.
