Cats are masters at hiding signs of illness. It's instinctually ingrained not to show weakness and become easy prey for other predators. Check out The Great Cat Watch For Wellness Sake for information on how to spot subtle signs of illness in your cat. Early detection of illness or disease leads to more effective treatment.
Below are listed some general health recommendations for healthy cats:
- Biannual physical exams for healthy cats less than 7 years of age (unless he/she is on any prescription medications, then he/she will need to been seen more often).
- Biannual physical exams, and annual blood chemistry (organ function) panel, blood count, urinalysis, and thyroid screening for healthy cats greater than 7 years of age.
- Feeding an age- and lifestyle-appropriate high quality mostly or all-canned diet low in carbohydrates, such as Royal Canin or Wellness..
- At least two (2) feline leukemia/FIV tests in your cat’s lifetime if he/she does NOT go outside. Annual feline leukemia/FIV tests if your cat does go outside.
- Microchip identification for all cats.
- FVRCP (distemper) vaccine, every 3 years after initial kitten series until 7-8 years of age.
- Rabies vaccine, given yearly.
- Annual feline leukemia vaccine for cats who spend any time outdoors or who could be exposed to feline leukemia positive cats, until 7-8 years of age.
- Heartworm preventative given once monthly year round.
- Daily home dental care (brushing) and regular dental evaluations from a veterinarian.
- Annual fecal testing for intestinal parasites (even for indoor-only cats).
- Strategic deworming for cats that spend any time hunting or outdoors.
- Flea preventative given once monthly for cats that spend any time outdoors.
